NOSTER / NISIS Midyear Meeting: Friday 2 February 2024

Halfway through the year, the Midyear Meeting focuses on career perspectives, both within and outside academia. As academic communities of emerging and senior scholars, NOSTER and NISIS offer a valuable platform to plan and promote your (academic) career.

This year’s meeting focuses on possible careers outside of academia. Three speakers will share their experiences across various sectors in the Netherlands, showing how they have tackled the transition into the professional world, but also how the professional world can benefit from your specialized knowledge and research skills. This session will be followed by workshops which will focus on specific skills and tools that can help you plan your future career.

Location: TuU, Plompetorengracht 3, Utrecht, at the Augustinuszaal (2.1).

Workshop 1: Translating academic research for the public: the do’s and don’ts of putting together an exhibition

How can you translate the results of your academic research into an exhibition? What kind of language should you adopt to ensure both the integrity of your research as well as a non-academic audience? Dr. Wijnia, “Head of Curation & Library” the museum Catharijneconvent is an expert at putting together research-driven exhibitions on religious themes for the public. Together with her you will tackle all the aspects of creating an exhibition, starting with a good creative concept, selecting objects, and writing clear texts. If you are considering a career in the arts (museums, churches, art galleries, archives, and libraries) after your master or PhD  then this workshop is a must!

Workshop 2: Panel interviews outside of academia: becoming a policy and governance interview guru

Job interviews: tough enough inside of academia, but what do they look like for research-oriented positions within the government? Dr. Maria Vliek will take you through all the ins and outs of panel interviews and procedures using her experience at the Netherlands Institute for Social Research. How does your academic experience translate to policy oriented research? How important is political and administrative sensitivity, and what does it mean for policy and research positions with the government or government-related institutions? These questions and more will be addressed and of course practiced: you’ll have the chance to polish your interview skills with a professional who’s been on both sides of the interview table!
