Netherlands Interuniversity School for Islamic Studies

Membership

PhD candidates and research master students whose research focuses on Islam and Muslim societies are invited to apply for NISIS junior membership. NISIS junior membership offers you automatic admission to most of the NISIS activities (the two NISIS seasonal graduate conferences and one-day events like workshops and writing clinics) and many other tangible benefits (contact with other junior and senior reseachers in the Netherlands, Belgium and other countries, becoming part of the Dutch-speaking scholarly community of the study of Islam and Muslim societies, and more).

Criteria for junior membership

NISIS junior membership is available for PhD candidates and research master students doing research on Islam and Muslim societies, provided they satisfy the criteria as set out in the NISIS membership regulations.

Research Master Students

Research master students enrolled in a research master programme at one of the participating universities of NISIS can become a NISIS Junior Member. Their master thesis should be related to Islam and Muslim societies. Research master students do not have to pay a membership fee.

Research master students who are registered at another national research school are also welcome to participate in NISIS events. If there is a selection procedure, NISIS members have priority.

Research master students who cannot or do not want to become a member of NISIS or another national research school will be asked to pay € 50 for each EC they obtain.

PhD candidates

PhD candidates who apply for NISIS membership must be enrolled in a PhD programme at one of the participating universities of NISIS. ‘Aio’s’, ‘oio’s’ or scholarship students (‘bursaal’) qualify as such. The one-time membership fee of €1000 will be covered by their institution.

External PhD  candidates who are enrolled in one of the participating universities can also apply for NISIS membership. The membership fee for external PhD candidates is a one-time fee of €500, which lasts for the duration of their PhD project. NISIS will send the invoice to the institution at which the PhD candidate is enrolled. The institution will either cover the costs or balance this with the PhD candidate or with the candidate’s employer (e.g. if he/she works at a university of applied sciences).

PhD candidates who are registered at another national research school are also welcome to participate in NISIS events. If there is a selection procedure, NISIS members have priority.

PhD candidates who cannot or do not want to become a member of NISIS or another national research school will be asked to pay € 50 for each EC they obtain.

Criteria for senior membership

NISIS senior membership is available for researchers, including at the postdoctoral level, with a position at one of the participating universities of NISIS, who hold a doctorate and whose research relates substantially to the study of Islam and Muslim societies. NISIS senior membership is also open to independent scholars holding a doctorate, who can provide proof of active research in the field. Candidates for membership can apply for membership by sending a request to the programme coordinator. The NISIS director decides on admission in consultation with the NISIS board.

Confidential Advisor

The NISIS confidential advisor is prof. Gabriëlle van den Berg. The confidential advisor advises NISIS junior members who encounter problems related to the NISIS training programme. It should be noted that the NISIS confidential advisor cannot mediate in problems related to individual research projects. In case of problems that affect individual research projects the first persons to talk to are the NISIS junior members’ own supervisor and/or the departement/faculty research officer, followed by the academic director of the department or the confidential advisor of the local graduate school.

Application

Candidates for membership may apply by sending a filled out application form (research master students, PhD students, senior research members) to nisis@uu.nl. Please mention ‘request for NISIS membership’ in the subject bar and do not forget to mention whether you are a research master student, a PhD candidate, or a post-doctoral researcher. Your completed application will be sent to the NISIS director and board for consideration.
